Report on Health Talk & Screening

Do you know that there are more than 500 million persons worldwide or about one adult in ten have some form of kidney damage, and every year millions die prematurely of heart attacks and strokes linked to kidney disease. In 2000, over 150 million people worldwide had diabetes. By 2005, the figure is expected to rise to 380 million of which, 80 million are in South East Asia.

We Malaysians are in the fight of our lives. Ten years ago, 8% of Malaysians suffered from diabetes. Today, the figure has risen to 14% and it shows no sign of slowing down! In 2007, 57% of new dialysis patients were diabetic and 7% were hypertensive.

Kidney disease, diabetes and high blood pressure are silent killers. Unless one goes for health screening, they are unlikely to be detected! [Source of information is from the National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia]

Realizing the importance of health awareness and as part of educational program for our valued employees, Human Resource Management Division, together with National Kidney Foundation of Malaysia (“NKF”), had organized the NKF Early Detection & Prevention Save Lives Program on 11 February 2010.

The program was part of our new initiatives to educate and create awareness among our employees on the importance of “prevention” rather than “cure”.

The 1-day program which started from 10:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. received an overwhelming response from the employees. Unfortunately, due to time constraint, we only managed to examine 125 employees although there were more towing in line to participate in the activities.

Subsequent analysis update we received from NKF reveals that the main common health problem among our employees is high cholesterol and there are also a few new cases of diabetes.
